The constantly changing organisation of the league highlights the communication problems of not just the Vichy period but of the war more generally. Prior to 1939 the League was national and not divided into regional section. An attempt to reimpose such a national league was reintroduced for the 1943/44 season but its unworkability was highlighted by a return to regional divisions for the following season.

Paris won their 3rd Coupe de France
The two teams had been able to recall all their mobilised players for the final (with the exception of Paris star Veinante). Paris had used 20 different players to get to the final, highlighting the difficulty of putting together a consistent football team during war-time. Only their 20 year-old captain René Roulier had played in all their cup games. Paris included 5 naturalised players in their team (3 Austrians -Hiden, Jordan & Hiltl- and 2 Hungarians- Mathé & Weiskopf). The Marseille team included a 'stateless' Austrian (Donnenfeld), a naturalised former German (Heiss) and the 40-year-old veteran Hungarian, Eisenhoffer. As is traditional in Paris-Marseille football matches the game was an aggressive affair. A player from each side was sent off. Marseille claimed that both the Paris goals were off-side. Final May 5 1940 in Paris (Parc des Princes). Attendance: 25 969. RC Paris: Hiden- Dupuis, Diagne- Zabalo, Jordan, Rouelle-Mathé, Hiltl, Roulier, Heisserer, Weiskopf. Olympique de Marseille: Delachet- Gonzalès, Malvy- Bastien, Conchy M; Durand- Dard G, Heiss, Aznar, Eisenhoffer, Donnenfeld.

| The eliminating rounds
were played within the
different zones of occupation (occupied/unoccupied/forbidden). The winners
of the different zones then had to play each other in the finals. Bordeaux, winner of the occupied zone, finally beat Fives, winner of the forbidden zone to claim their first cup. The final was played on Sunday 25 May 1941 at the Stade Municipal de Saint-Ouen in front of only 15 000 spectators. Since 1930, only the 1940 final had been watched by less than 30 000 people. Final May 25 1941 in Saint-Ouen, Stade Municipal. Attendance: 15 230. Girondins ASP: Gérard-Homar, Mancisidor-Ben Ali, Plésiak, Rummerlhardt-Szego, Lopez, Urtizberea, Pruvot, Arnaudeau. SC Fives: Jurzick-Gyselinck, Pollet-Trenelle, Jadrejak, Bourbotte-Sommerlinck, Tancré, Van Canaeghem, Dudziak, Waggi.

| The
final was first played on 9 May 1943. The teams drew 2-2. Marseille
protested that one of the Bordeaux players, Nemeur, was not properly
registered. The Commission Fédérale decided that Bordeaux should
therefore lose the final. But the Vichy Commissaire Général au Sport,
Colonel Pascot, intervened claiming that a football match should be won on
the field and not before football's governing body. For the first time in
French history a football cup final would have to be replayed and the
proceeds of the match donated to a charity for Prisoners of War. In the
replay on 22 May, Marseille of the unoccupied zone beat Bordeaux of the occupied to
clinch their 6th cup. 32212 spectators watched the match in which
Manu Aznar's 31st minute goal made a hole in the netting of the Bordeaux
goal (which he claimed was more a sign of the poor equipment available at
this time than the power of his shot).
The Marseille team contained 7 players born in the city: Dard, Delachet, Patrone, Pironti, Robin, Scotti, Vénéziano. This was something of a novelty- the war having deprived the team of its foreign players. Roger Scotti was only 17 years old at the time of this final. Final May 9 1943 in Colombes (Yves du Manoir). Olympique de Marseille-Girondins ASP 2-2 [aet] Goals: 4' Pironti 1-0 55' Robin 2-0 56' Patrone (og) 2-1 82' Persillon 2-2 Attendance: 32 500. | Return
to the traditional cup format as RC Paris claim their 4th trophy. For the
first time the players had numbers on their backs.
This was a repeat of the 1938/39 final when Paris had beaten Lille by 3 goals to 1. Only 5 players remained from that pre-war Paris team (Bigot, Darui, Dupuis, Heisserer & Jordan). The 1945 team contained several players of Algerian origin who were briefly stationed in Paris as part of the Air Force team. Final May 6 1945 in Colombes (Yves du Manoir). Attendance: 49 983. RC Paris: Molinuevo-Dupuis, Jordan, Salva-Samuel, Jasseron-Heisserer, Ponsetti-Philippot, Bongiorni, Vaast. Lille OSC: Darui-Jadrejak, Stefaniak, Cardon-Bourbotte, Bigot-Baratte, Carré-Vandooren, Bihel, Lechantre. |

Footballing highlights
of the war years
On 21 April 1940, Ahmed Ben Bella, future leader of the FLN and President of Algeria, played his only match for l'Olympique de Marseille. He scored 1 of the 9 goals in a Marseille victory against FC Antibes.
On 4 October 1942, Emmanuel Aznar of Marseille established a record by scoring 9 goals in one match against Avignon, even though he only played the first 70 minutes of the game. Olympique de Marseille went on to win the match by 20 goals to 2. That season Aznar scored 45 goals in 30 league matches and a total of 56 in 38 games including the Coupe de France. During a Marseille footballing career which lasted from 1936 to 1951 Aznar found the net 115 times.
The French cup final of May 1943 was the first ever to go to a replay. Marseille and Bordeaux drew the first match 2-2. Marseille won the rematch 4-0 to claim their 6th Coupe de France.
SPORT: CYCLING
Tour de France
The 'Tour de France', one of cycling's most famous events, was suspended between 1940 and 1947. When the race resumed in 1947 it was won by Frenchman Jean Robic.
