Areas of research include: gender and cultural theory, race and representation, African-American literature and culture, film and film theory, popular culture. Current research is on urban African-American literature and culture, particularly the Harlem Renaissance period; race and urban space; and multimedia initiatives in urban study.

Publications include Looking for Harlem: Urban Aesthetics in African American Literature (Pluto, 2000) and, co-edited with Dr Liam Kennedy, Urban Space and Representation (Pluto, 2000).
