ASSIROS: IRON AGE POTTERY
1: Fine handmade
Pottery of the Iron Age continues the traditions of the preceding period. The fine ware is handmade and burnished but thinner walled and fired at a rather higher temperature to give a harder fabric. The familiar Bronze Age shapes continue in use with slight modifications and many of these vessels are of a remarkable size - up to 40 litres in capacity. The large number of vessels from Phase 2 as a whole is unusual for a settlement and provides a clear picture of shapes and preferences.

The wishbone handled bowl becomes smaller and is now made with only a single handle |

|
The cut away neck jug acquires an angle on either side of the rim and is often made with a twisted handle |
|
The four handled jar becomes taller and the division between belly and neck is no longer emphasised. |
|
Apart from twisted handles which are used on several shapes of Iron Age pottery, other types of decoration are rare and generally simple. Wheel made pottery is restricted to a fine grey ware, and very rare examples of painted pottery of Southern Greek style.
Other vessels were made in coarse cooking wares.
