CLAY OBJECTS FROM NEOLITHIC SERVIA

SHERD DISKS

cut from broken pieces of pottery are frequent in Neolithic levels of every period and may have served as substitutes for spindle whorls.

CLAY 'SPOOLS'

The function of the these objects is uncertain, but they are most frequent in the EN period. One possibility is that they were a simple form of loom weight since they are often found in groups.

Cf account by Jill Carington Smith in Servia I 227-232

CLAY 'ANCHORS'

These anchors are typical of the later stages of the EBA throughout Mainland Greece (but not the islands or Crete). Although it has been suggested that they have some connection with weaving there are no signs of chafing on them such as might be caused by the warp threads and they remain enigmatic.
