ASSIROS: IRON AGE POTTERY

3: Wheelmade

Only one vessel found in the Iron Age levels at Assiros has parallels in other regions, a Protogeometric amphora. Many of its fragments were found sealed below the Phase 2 floor. The arrangement of the concentric circles and the shape of the neck show this piece to be one of a class found at several northern Aegean sites, including Troy, which imitates Attic prototypes. Recent results from Dendrochronology and 14C  show that it was broken before 1070 BC, about 100 years before the date usually accepted.
