- Chronology
of building projects in Rome during Augustus' Principate. This is
invaluable as a quick reference guide, and is clearly presented.

A
‘virtual’ tour of Rome
Plan de Rome – another ‘virtual’ tour, this time courtesy of the Université de
Caen and based on Paul Bigot’s 19th century model. The text is in
French, but is well-worth having a go at (if you have any understanding of the
language); the images and reconstructions in the ‘Virtuel’ section are
fascinating.
- Trajan’s Column : some impressive (and very detailed) images.
- Platner & Ashby’s A
Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome (London 1929) : courtesy of
Perseus
- Augustus:
Images of Power – an excellent site, which provides images and text on the
Mausoleum of Augustus, the Ara Pacis, and the Gemma Augustea.
- Theatrum
Pompei Project is a site dedicated to Pompey, and takes in lots of
useful info / images of his (impact on) the city
|
 |
- Grove
Dictionary of Art: Rome – the text is not particularly exciting or
detailed, but there are some nice images to be found. Unfortunately the
pages are very slow-loading, so you'll need to be patient with it...
|
- Roman Fora : ‘official’ web
site – a slick site with a virtual tour of the fora, web cams, information on the excavations (and a
must-see ‘Welcome’ from the Mayor of Rome).
|
 |
- Roman
Art and Architecture : self explanatory. Images grouped by genre (painting,
sculpture, architecture), period and location.
- The
Forum Romanum – a site that was developed by students, for a web
competition. The section on the forum has a useful click-able map, and you may
find other things of interest too.
- Maecenas
– lots of images.
